Reader-funded city news site breaks even in under two years

Dan Hayes 2022A city news website funded by reader subscriptions has joined its sister title in announcing that it is now turning a profit.

The Sheffield Tribune has revealed it has broken even after just under two years in business.

The Tribune is edited by former Sheffield Star journalist Dan Hayes, who launched the site with support from the Manchester Mill.

The Mill itself broke even in November last year, two years after launching.

Posting on Twitter on Tuesday, the Tribune’s said: “Huge, happy news from us. Over the weekend, we scored enough new paying members that we’re now breaking even.

“Which means doing thoughtful, long-form local journalism is now viable in Sheffield — and this is just the beginning.”

Earlier this month the Tribune revealed it had 1,300 paid subscribers.

Two jobs have also been created as part of an expansion involving the Mill, Tribune and their sister title the Liverpool Post.
