Echo scores 13 O2 nominations as organisers hail record year

The Liverpool Echo will compete for 13 prizes at the O2 Media Awards North West after organisers announced a record-breaking year for entries.

The Echo is up for awards including Daily Newspaper of the Year, where it will compete against the current title holder, Blackpool daily The Gazette, as well as the Lancashire Post and Stoke-on-Trent newspaper The Sentinel.

Eight Echo journalists and photographers are nominated individually, while the paper is also shortlisted in the Most Memorable, Specialist Publication, On-line Media and Team of the Year categories.

The Team of the Year nominations comes as a result of the paper’s Champions League coverage, which saw it run three special Madrid editions over the weekend of May’s European Cup final for supporters of Liverpool Football Club who had travelled to Spain.

Elsewhere, the Manchester Evening News is nominated in the Weekly Newspaper of the Year category following the launch of its Sunday edition in February.

The MEN on Sunday faces competition from the Cumberland News, Northwich Guardian and Westmorland Gazette for the crown.

More than 420 entries were received across the different categories – a new record for the event.

Nicola Green, director of corporate affairs at O2, said: “The O2s showcase excellence in news, sport, entertainment, social and community media and applaud the growth of creative industries in the North West.

“Whether it’s writers delivering grassroots journalism or programme makers winning national acclaim, the awards highlight the impact the media has on our communities.”

This year’s presentation evening will be held at the AJ Bell Stadium, in Salford, on Thursday 7 November, and will be hosted by BBC Breakfast’s Louise Minchin and O2’s senior corporate communications manager Dave Massey.
