NCTJ launches search for journalists of future

A contest has been launched to find the journalists of the future as part of the National Council for the Training of Journalists’ 60th anniversary celebrations.

The organisation has teamed up with more than 70 regional newspapers across the UK which are searching for budding journalists between 16 and 18-years-old, while further titles are encouraged to get involved.

Under the Stars of the Future competition which starts on 18 April, young people should submit a 200-word news story to their local participating newspaper about events or issues in their community, school or family.

Each winner will have their story printed in their local paper with a feature about themselves, along with a certificate and being featured on the NCTJ’s website.

Members of the NCTJ board will then choose an overall winner from these who will be awarded a cash prize, a week’s work experience and advice on a career in journalism.

They will also be featured on the NCTJ’s website and their regional paper.

Newspapers interested in joining the contest should contact Emma Hart at the NCTJ on 01799 544944 or [email protected]. For information on entering the competition, visit nctj.com.

There is no future. Who are you trying to kid? Anyone entering this industry now needs their head examined.

Well said, Archant Reject. I don’t know, 16- to 18-year-olds (Helen, there is not any need for the hyphens in ‘between 16 and 18 years old’); it has been nearly a decade since my old place took on someone that old. As for requiring a degree, balderdash, most of the grads can’t spell (but can pass exams) and so more work for subs.

Stop being so negative! Everybody has to start somewhere and I would have loved this opportunity to get my work published when I was that age.
