It’s now ten years since we at HoldtheFrontPage launched our Front Page of the Year poll, so to mark the milestone we thought we’d take a look back at the previous winners of the annual readers’ vote.
The North West Evening Mail won our inaugural contest in 2013 with its front page featuring 1,200 images of local people made into a mosaic of a baby’s face, published as part of a campaign to save maternity services at a local hospital.
Reading Today’s victory in the 2023 poll was the fifth time the prize has gone to a weekly newspaper, following the successes of the Luton News (2014), Fife Free Press (2016), Warrington Guardian (2017) and Derry Journal (2022.)
Other winners have included the Bournemouth Echo (2015), the Blackpool Gazette (2018), the Dundee Evening Telegraph (2019), Scottish Sunday title The National (2020), and Reach plc daily titles who published a joint splash in 2021 calling on the government to deliver its spending plans for railways including the now-abandoned HS2.
The Dundee Evening Telegraph also won our ‘best front page of the 21st century’ poll carried out in 2020 to mark the 20th anniversary of HoldtheFrontPage, which first went live in February 2000.
