Four jobs created as publisher launches new football website

A regional publisher has launched a specialist website covering football in Scotland with four new jobs created as a result.

Reach plc’s Football Scotland site went live today after previously having an active presence on social media over recent weeks.

The Glasgow-based site is edited by Gregor Kyle, who previously served as launch editor of Reach’s Glasgow Live news website.

He is joined by three new reporters – Adam Miller, Gabriel McKay and Jules Boyle – who have been specifically recruited for the project.

Adam has previously run irreverent Scottish football Twitter channel Old Firm Facts, and some of the pieces on Football Scotland will continue to be run under that name.

Gabriel joins from the Football Italia website, while Jules is a regular contributor to the Sunday Mail and Glasgow Live.

HTFP understands the site will focus on news, features and fan-focused content in the model of Reach’s existing Football.London site, while match coverage and press conferences will continue to be covered by existing staff working for sister titles in Scotland such as the Daily Record.

The site’s homepage includes tabs for news from all of Scotland’s top four divisions, as well as transfer news, features and news on Scots playing abroad.

Said Gregor: “The game in Scotland is in the midst of a real resurgence at the moment. We have the most exciting title race in recent memory and there couldn’t be a better time to launch this site.

“Scottish football is unique and the supporters know what sets our game apart. We’re not living beyond our means and playing catch up with England anymore.

“There is a genuine connection between the clubs, players and fans and we will try and tap into that.”

Football Scotland’s sports desk will be staffed seven days a week between 7am and 11pm.

The latest move by Reach follows its launch last month of ‘The Football Project’, which will see 16 football journalism jobs created in other areas of the United Kingdom.

However, it is understood Football Scotland’s launch and the creation of the four associated jobs in Glasgow are separate to this.

Reach Scotland editor in chief David Dick said: “We have built a new team, completely independent of our existing titles, who write in a different tone and style that adds something new to what is already being offered across the Scottish media.

“This website is going to be a lot of fun and I really believe it can establish itself as a well-loved fixture in the Scottish football world.

“We have a great team in place and I’m very excited to see Football Scotland grow over the weeks and months ahead.”

So of the four new jobs created, three were already people working for the Record? Speaks volumes about the state of Central Quay in 2019…
