Sister dailies’ photographer named UK’s best by picture editors guild

James HardistyA photographer on two sister dailies has been named the best in his field by the UK Picture Editors Guild.

James Hardisty, pictured left, of the Yorkshire Post and Yorkshire Evening Post, claimed the Genesis Regional Photographer of the Year title at the Guild’s annual awards ceremony in London.

James’s award-winning portfolio included striking images from the Charlie Hebdo vigil held in Leeds, the consecration of the first female Bishop held at York Minster and a dramatic sports image of the The City of Leeds Synchronised Swimming Club in action, pictured below.

He was presented with his award at the event hosted by Labour’s candidate for the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, and journalist Kate Silverton.

Said James: “I’m delighted and overjoyed to win this award, it’s great to have my photographs judged and recognised by the UK Picture Editors Guild.”

In all, the awards received more than 380 entries, with more than 2,000 photographs considered by the judging panel.

Ian Day, assistant editor of the YP and YEP, said: “James constantly produces excellent photographs and his winning portfolio shows the quality of his work over the last year.

“These awards are the Oscars for press photographers and James rightly deserves this honour.”

Nice to see a Photographer still employed by a regional newspaper.
How long will the Picture Editors Guild still be able to hold the Awards?
All staff snappers on my local regional newspaper have now been made redundant!

Great Pic….like to see a submitted reader/reporter image as good as this…

I wonder how long it will be before this particular category is gone?
In future it will be ‘best reader supplied image’ and ‘ best use of RGC in a front page story , that’s one side of the industry that’s really growing

What a poor picture…some of the subjects appear to be upside down!
Seriously, though. Well done, James, and good to note the words “award-winning photographer” in the same sentence. Never thought we’d see that again in this brave new world of redundancies, office closures and multi-title editorships.

Well done I say. Sad that Trinity Mirror/Local World are getting rid of all the talented photographers they have yet launching a new paper that needs photos like the rest and relying on UGC.

Why doesnt someone or a group of photographers produce s photo led nees paper? Theres nough of them out there looking for work and plenty of scope and it’s different, any decent sales rep ( if you can find any left in the regionals) should be able to monetise such a unique proposition, as it would be of great appeal to local people
Think the old Picture Post but on a very local and regional level
