Sister dailies’ photographer named best in the regional press

A photographer working for two sister dailies has been named the best in the regional press by the UK Picture Editors Guild.

Simon Hulme triumphed in the Regional Photographer of the Year category at the Guild’s annual awards ceremony, which was held in London on Monday night.

Freelance John Giles was highly commended, while Simon’s Post and YEP colleague James Hardisty, who won the title last year, was commended along with Getty Images photographer Charles McQuillan.

Ian Day, deputy editor of the Post and YEP, was among the judges.

Addressing the winners, he added: “It’s been an absolute honour and pleasure to carry out the role and to work with a dedicated judging panel. The photography produced has been world class.

“In 20 years time, imagine being an A’level history student and coming face to face with the question – ‘Please explain 2016′.

“All they will have to do is look back at the excellent, powerful and highly emotive photographs in these awards.

“As press photographers, you have all collectively answered the question with your skill and talent – for this, you should all be rightly proud.”

After his victory, Simon tweeted: “So happy to win the Regional Photographer of the Year at the UK Picture Editors Guild. Congrats to to my colleague [James] as well.”

Whilst congratulating Simon on this axccolade, the field these days must be incredibly thin with most of the talented togs since made redundant and no longer employed in the regional prtess
I would suggest a “Regional Press freelance photographer of the year “category be introduced,if there isnt one already.

With the talent drain of photographers( as well as journalists and commercial sales people) from local publishing, future categories are likely to include ” Best reader supplied snap of the year” and ” Best scrape of social media to get a photo”award.

And there’s that imaginary word ‘lensman’ again. Is HTFP contractually obliged to use it on every story about a photographer?

Congrats to Simon – good to see there are still some of us regional staff togs clinging to the wreckage

@mikelowe – funny how you never see HTFP call a reporter a blunt. (Note to mods – this is NOT ‘tog-rhyming slang!)
