Regional publisher marks 20th anniversary of print plant

A regional publisher has celebrated the 20th anniversary of the opening of its print plant.

Archant’s print centre in Norwich has consumed 500,000 tonnes of newspaper, 10,000 tonnes of ink, printed 200 billion pages and produced 15 million plates since it was opened by the Duke of Kent in 1995.

Since it opened the centrem pictured below, increased its capacity to ten press towers capable of printing up to four papers and 320 different pages at the same time – making it one of the largest privately owned regional newspaper presses in the country.

The company’s investment in Kodak thermal image setters with FM staccato screening was a first in the newspaper industry and allowed for sharper images compared to the traditional newspaper AM screening.

It was also the first regional newspaper plant to be awarded ISO 14001, ISO 18001 and 9001 certification simultaneously for its environmental standards, health and safety and quality management.

The centre has also been awarded ISO 50001 for its efficient energy management.

Nick Schiller, Archant group operations director, said: “I’m proud to have led the team at Print for the last 10 years. The team were among the first to adopt contemporary manufacturing techniques into a traditional print environment.

“Today the Print Centre produces some 3.5 million newspapers a week, on-time with ‘best in class’ quality at highly competitive costs.

“These achievements are well recognised and respected within the industry, something which the team at Print are rightly very proud of and I for one share that pride.”

Clive Want, Director of the Centre, added: “We have a fantastic team of hard working, dedicated, creative people at Archant Print and we have a reputation in the industry for fantastic quality and service, demonstrated by the quality awards and commendations received over the years.”

the whole piece reads like a blatant advertorial for Archant commercial print services, It’s a wonder they didn’t add ‘ free quotes, no job too small’ at the end
Clever stuff chaps, I saw what you did there.

What exactly were you expecting to read about an anniversary of a very modern print plant successfully surviving in a diminishing market place – a TripAdvisor-style review of its facilities?

Wonder when it will be a piece that reads along the lines of “so sorry for the xx years of hard work, but we have to close/reduce….in line with the business needs.”?

Will Archant be similarly singing the praises of Mustard TV in 20 years time?

Citizen obviously has a vested interest with such a defensive line , seems @insider has hit a nerve
That reminds me of the ‘ special supplement’ they produced when they opened the place and were congratulating themselves over page after page , it had a lovely big photo of “the duke of Kent” who opened it a few days later, except it wasn’t a photo of him it was another member of the Royal family altogether! , oh well start as you mean to go on
