Former JP group editor back in newspapers after nine-month break

01Susan_Windram01LSA former group editor of 11 Johnston Press titles is returning to local newspapers as editor of a Scottish weekly.

Susan Windram, left, has been named as the new editor of the Oban Times by publisher Wyvex Media.

The move comes nine month after Susan left her role as group editor of the Selkirk-based Southern Reporter and 10 other titles in the JP-owned Tweeddale Press stable.

She initially moved to a writer and sub-editor role with Scottish Field magazine, but is now returning to what she terms her ‘first love’ – local newspapers.

Wyvex Media Group managing director Alister Bennett said: “We are delighted to confirm Susan as our new Editor in Oban.

“She fought off stiff opposition for the post and we believe Susan’s passion for community news and experience in running newspapers in more rural areas will lead the Oban Times to even greater heights.”

Added Susan: “This is a fantastic opportunity for me to return to my first love – local weekly newspapers.

“The Oban Times is a fine example of a quality local, family owned newspaper. It is a real honour to be entrusted with its future development and I will continue to uphold the values which have made it such a success”

Susan replaces Willie Mack, who joined the Oban Times in May 2014 and left in October.

Before becoming editor of the Southern Reporter in 2005, Susan spent 14 years at The Scotsman and Edinburgh Evening News.

Too good not to continue at the cutting edge of news-gathering, good to see that Susan is back where she belongs. Having said that, I’m glad not to be accountable to her for my shortcomings under the JP regime any more. Great area. Great journalist. She’ll do well!
