New era as South East weekly goes compact

A weekly newspaper in the South East has this week reduced in size from broadsheet to tabloid.

The Wokingham Times, a Surrey & Berkshire Media title ultimately owned by Trinity Mirror, made the transition on Wednesday.

The newspaper says the change is aimed at giving readers a better and easier to read format using a simple but modern and clean design.

A report in this week’s edition states that readers will “find it easier to pick up now it’s compact-sized – and harder to put down because it’s simply packed with fantastic news and features.”

Wokingham Time web editor Lucy Thorne with the first edition of the compact Wokingham Times

It reads: “The Wokingham Times has always been at the heart of the community which means it understands the issues in the town.

“Our Crowthorne editon, too, is right at the pulse of Crowthorne life.

“So we haven’t radically altered your paper – we’ve simply given you better and an easier-to-read format with a simple but modern and clean design.

“So, as the old saying goes, that’s what’s in it for you… simply all you need if you care about the area.”

Readers are being asked what they think of the new look paper.

Masthead uses same fonts as Bucks Advertiser (circa 2003).

Why is the web editor holding it and not the newspaper editor?

@Sly Dig, The Bucks Ad is a Trinity Paper too.

@ The rest of you, I imagine the web person tweeted/Facebooked that pic and this is where the story has come from.

Er, the Bucks Advertiser masthead is nothing like the Wokingham paper as far as I can see. And why on earth are web editors not allowed to touch the paper/any paper?
