Website’s acting editor to take on role on permanent basis

20221002_175141The acting editor of Northern Ireland’s biggest commercial news site is to take on the role on a permanent basis.

Reach plc has confirmed the appointment of Sheena McStravick, left, as editor of Belfast Live.

Sheena has run the site in an acting capacity since her predecessor, Ryan Smith, was seconded to what was then an undisclosed new project in November 2022.

This turned out to be launch-editing Reach’s new platform aimed at the US Irish community, the Irish Star.

Said Sheena: “I’m delighted to be appointed permanent Editor of Belfast Live. It feels like a full circle moment to now lead the website I helped to grow from humble beginnings to the biggest commercial news site in NI.

“At the core of Belfast Live has always been its commitment to serving all communities in Northern Ireland and bringing them the latest breaking news first, as well as delving into local communities and giving people a voice, and this is something I am proud to lead our team of talented journalists in continuing to do, hopefully for many years to come.”

Michael Marsh, head of digital publishing in Ireland, added: “With nine years of experience working with the brand, Sheena is well-equipped to steer Belfast Live into the future.

“Sheena has been a key cog in the wheel since day one and knows the site – and its audience – inside out. I’ve no doubt Belfast Live is in safe hands and that it will continue to thrive under Sheena’s leadership.”

Sheena began her career in 2012 and previously worked for Johnston Press before joining Reach forerunner Trinity Mirror nine years ago.

According to the latest IPSOS figures, Belfast Live had an audience of 1.4m during February.
