An independent publisher is exploring new ways to make its online content pay thanks to a Google-funded programme.
Tindle Newspapers says it is looking at ways it can build potential subscription or membership models for its titles as part of a programme run by FT Strategies, the subscriptions consultancy from the Financial Times.
Tindle was part of an initial round of the programme, prompting the group to explore possible paywalls at titles including the Aberystwyth-based Cambrian News.
Fresh Google News Initiative funding means the publisher has now been chosen for an extension programme.
Tindle group digital editor Emily Woolfe, pictured, told HTFP: “Tindle is delighted to be part of the extension programme, which – thanks to Google News Initiative funding – allows us to look at how we can build a subscription or membership model, and then look to creating a sustainable way to continue to provide content online.
“As part of that, we will be looking at new technologies but also looking at the type of content we provide and how our audiences react to that.
“Cambrian News, for example, has a core audience of extremely loyal readers and we want to look at what it is that attracts them – and how to increase that percentage.
“It’s a really exciting time and we are looking forward to where the experiments will lead us.”
Managing director Scott Wood added: “The FT Strategies programme has already been valuable as we shape a new future for our trusted brands in the communities we serve.
“We look forward to working with our partners over the months ahead.”
