Journalist to realise London Marathon dream denied by pandemic

A journalist whose London Marathon dream was denied by the coronavirus pandemic is set to run the race almost three years later.

Kate Young, community content editor at the Isle of Wight County Press, was due to compete in the marathon in April 2020 before Covid-19 caused its cancellation.

Now, the 47-year-old will take on Sunday’s marathon in aid of the Wessex Cancer Trust.

Kate, pictured, has previously fundraised for the charity after completing the Winchester Half Marathon in 2018 and the Isle of Wight Challenge in 2019.

She told the County Press: “I got a place for the 2020 race via the ballot in the autumn of 2019, but my 2020 entry was postponed to this year, so this race has effectively been three years in the waiting

“I’m very glad to be heading to the start line this time around.

“My training has been a bit patchy, so I won’t be the fastest runner out there, but I’m fairly confident I will reach the finish line.”

Other regional press figures running in this year’s marathon include David Bartlett, Reach plc’s audience and content director for the South-East, and former Northern Echo sports editor Nick Loughlin.
