Daily’s home of more than half a century goes up for sale

A regional daily has put its offices and print hall up for sale saying it is now too big for its purposes.

The Shropshire Star says it is “considering all options” about where it will be based in future after its premises in Ketley, Telford, went on the market.

The 5.2 acre Waterloo Road site, pictured, contains a two-storey open plan office building and is being marketed by agents as a potential development opportunity.

A purpose built printing press facility, constructed in the 1970s, also forms part of the site.

The decision to put the facility up for sale comes after the Star’s owner the Midland News Association revealed plans to outsource its printing operation last year.

The Ketley presses were closed as a result, placing seven jobs at risk of redundancy.

The MNA has yet to reveal where the Star, which was launched in 1964, will be based after the site is sold.

A spokeswoman for the company told HTFP: The premises at Ketley have become too big for the business since printing was moved off-site. We are therefore considering all options for the future.”

As a result of the office going on the market, the Star held an online auction for items it held there.

Lots on offer included a collection of civic coats of arms, old football and cricket programmes, wooden printing sets, signs and old adverts.

Items including surplus office furniture, stationery and crockery were also listed in the auction.
