Man United rename Old Trafford press room in regional daily journalist’s memory

One of the world’s most famous football clubs has renamed its press room in memory of a regional journalist.

Manchester United has changed the press room at its Old Trafford stadium to honour David Meek, who covered the club for the Manchester Evening News for 38 years.

David, pictured, who also helped write legendary United manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s match programme notes, died in October aged 88.

The ‘David Meek Press Lounge’ was unveiled ahead of Saturday’s match against Watford, with David’s widow and two children in attendance as guests of the club.

The room features a picture of David, with notepad in hand, alongside tributes from Sir Alex Ferguson and ex-United player Paddy Crerand.

Sir Alex’s quote reads: “David Meek had been chronicling the fortunes of United on behalf of the Manchester Evening News for so long that he was a part of the fabric of the Old Trafford.”

Inside excerpts from some of David’s reports are also displayed on the wall.

MEN editor-in-chief Darren Thwaites told HTFP: “It’s a fitting tribute to a journalist who will forever be a big part of the history of both Manchester United and the Manchester Evening News.

“We’re very proud to see the club recognising David’s contribution and ensuring his legacy as an inspiration for sports journalists continues.”

A fitting tribute to one of legends of regional sports reporting, and to a man who was a Gentleman of the Press in every meaning of the words.

    Well done, Manchester United.

well done United. Meek was peerless, both in his knowledge and his writing ability. And lucky to write in the era of Best and Co.
