Editors to debate journalism in ‘post truth’ world

Hannah ChapmanTwo regional editors will discuss journalism a “post truth” world at a roadshow event hosted by the press watchdog.

Northern Echo editor Hannah Chapman, pictured, and Grimsby Live digital editor Jamie Macaskill will speak at the event, which is part of a series of talks being run by the Independent Press Standards Organisation.

The debate will examine the increasing concern surrounding “fake news”, as well as what is meant by “freedom of the press”.

Other topics up for discussion include self-regulation, whether news organidations are showing more responsibility and whether we are seeing new definitions of being “wronged by the press”.

Outgoing IPSO chairman Sir Alan Moses will also speak at thr event, which is being held at Newcastle University.

Previous roadshows have been held by IPSO in cities including Glasgow, Belfast and Manchester.

    Was actually thinking about this the other day and it occurred to me that this was all pretty much started by sports journalism.

    If you think about it, long before the concept of ‘fake news’ had its own place in the dictionary, you’d read the sports pages in full knowledge that 95% of it was pure lies.

    “Reds move for Zidane as world cup winner spotted eyeing houses in Formby”.

    I know it’s not true, they know it’s not true, but we form an unspoken agreement that it’s somehow okay, because we’ve blurred the lines of journalism and entertainment.
