Daily launches bid to save city’s ‘landmark’ department store

A regional daily has launched a bid to save a “landmark” department store on its patch from closure.

Wolverhampton daily the Express & Star is campaigning to keep the city’s Beatties store open.

Beatties is owned by House of Fraser, which went into administration earlier this month.

According to the Express & Star, new owner Mike Ashley will make decisions on the future of House of Fraser stores based purely on whether they make financial sense.

Backing Beatties

The E&S is now calling on readers to share their memories of Beatties in a bid to convince Mr Ashley of the store’s importance.

Editor Keith Harrison said: “We want to show Mike Ashley how much this city landmark means to the people of Wolverhampton and why it should be saved from closure.

“We want to present him with a bumper dossier of memories, anecdotes and views that he can’t ignore.

“This is our chance to convince Mr Ashley that Beatties has to be one of those saved and why. And we need your help to do that.”

I wonder if this is where journalists at all the local papers that have been cut back have gone wrong.

Bosses didn’t need hard figures and profits, they just needed a dossier of “anecdotes and views”.

Mike Ashley definitely comes across as the sort of person who will take that seriously and not dismiss it as a bit of summer filler. Definitely.
