Daily embraces its colloquial name with brand new masthead

A regional daily has relaunched with a new masthead which “embraces” the newspaper’s colloquial name.

Aberdeen-based daily The Press & Journal has rebranded with a “simpler” masthead bearing the name ‘The P&J’ with the full name in a smaller font underneath.

Inside the newspaper, the news section has been rearranged and redesigned to create a “better flow” of local, Scottish and national news.

There is also a new comment section called Agenda, with an extra column a day and a new rota of columnists.

Reader feedback has led to family announcements being given their own daily section which will now also feature obituaries of well-known local, national and international figures.

Daily farming content has also been increased.

The cover price of the P&J’s weekday editions has increased from £1.10 to £1.20 at the same time.

Richard Neville, editor in chief of morning newspapers at owner DC Thomson Media, said: “It’s a bold move but The Press & Journal, like all communities in the north and north-east of Scotland, must continually evolve and adapt to the modern world by trying new things.

“We continue to invest in quality content and I’m confident that you won’t find better reported local news anywhere in the north of Scotland.”

The new-look paper hit the shelves for the first time on Saturday.

That’s the ugliest front page I have ever seen.

And as for Richard Neville’s quote about adapting to the modern world by trying new things – the paper is still using a decades old gothic font, and giving more space to long standing staple local paper content of BMDs and obits, as well as ramping up the farming content, which I bet they all absolutely hate having to do.

This is going back to basics, not anything modern. I absolutely applaud it, but don’t badge it as something it’s not.
