Regional press accounts for third of royal picture award shortlist

A selection of photographs vying to be crowned the best media picture of royalty has been unveiled – with regional press entries accounting for almost one third of those shortlisted.

The News Media Association has unveiled the overall shortlist for its second Royal Rota photography competition, which includes 15 regional press photos out of 48 entries in total.

There is a prize for Regional/Local Newspaper Rota Photo of the Year, while a bonus category of the Best Election Photo has also been announced for this year.

An overall winner will be selected from all categories.

The public has until 5pm on Friday to vote for their favourite images, and the top three pictures in each category will then be judged by a panel of industry experts to select the overall winners.

Regional press entries include efforts from photographers at newspapers which have royal residences on their patch – including the Lynn News, Windsor Express and Windsor Observer.

Others entries come from the Brecon & Radnor Express, Newbury Weekly News, Nottingham Post, Oxford Mail, Portsmouth daily The News, Tamworth Herald, Wells Journal, Wiltshire Gazette & Herald and York daily The Press.

The NMA manages the Royal Rota on behalf of its members, allocating passes for the hundreds of Royal engagements undertaken by members of the Royal Family each year and ensuring that the material is pooled among members.
