Make more use of local airport, regional daily urges readers

A regional daily has launched a campaign to get more readers to use their local airport – instead of “putting cash into other cities’ economies.”

The Star, Sheffield, is urging people to use Doncaster Sheffield Airport in order to help its patch “improve and grow”.

The airport, which opened 11 years ago, is a 25 minute drive from Sheffield city centre and offers flights to more than 40 destinations.

In an editorial launching the #FlyDSA campaign, Star editor Nancy Fielder said it was “time to help ourselves and our own city”.

She wrote: “If you, I and our business leaders are serious about driving this city forward then we need to spend our money here. We must stop putting our hard earned cash into Manchester or another city’s economy and fly from our airport.

“Let’s create those jobs here and make our area into a destination that is easy to access from all corners of the world.  Flying from our own airport is one simple way to take action and help our own city.”

“There is massive potential for development around our airport and it is a key gateway to making Sheffield more of a tourist destination. It is also a lot simpler and quicker to reach from Sheffield than any other airport.

“Our airport is an important piece in the jigsaw of this city’s future. Sheffield as a whole will be better off if we help it to succeed and grow.”

Whilst i am not too familiar with this particular airport,in the commercial world we live in customers will use whichever “business” offers the best facilities or value, there must be reason s why peopkle use alternate airports, travellers will only use the airport if they can travel to where they want to go at reasonable prices, its not just a matter of saying ” use our services” the services have to be there in the first place. The editors comments and plea would have been better aimed at the airport operators than the general public.
Like the newspaper industry,if the product isnt right people will go elsewhere get the basics right and customers will surely follow

I believe 10 percent of Yorkshire folk fly out of a Yorkshire Airport. That’s pretty low but is long standing because of lack of choice. There are more and more services at these airports and Doncaster has over 40 destinations. More choice.

It’s a great airport hassle free so worth taking a look. Agree with SSJ if more operators are found more routes in the meantime see what is available you may be very pleasantly surprised as I was.
