Weekly marks Olympic triumph with gold masthead and front page wrap

A weekly newspaper’s front page wraparound and golden masthead marked an Olympic triumph for an athlete from its patch.

The Cornishman paid tribute to rower Helen Glover with the wrap, pictured below, which featured on Thursday’s edition of the Penzance-based newspaper.

Helen, who was born in Truro and grew up in Penzance, took gold in the coxless pairs in Rio de Janeiro along with partner Heather Stanning.

Glover and Stanning also won the same competition at the previous Summer Olympics in London.

Editor David Thomas said: “We went all guns blazing when Helen won the gold in 2012 – and she has gone from strength to strength since then, so we thought we needed to do something really special to mark her historic achievement.

“We got the design team to create the wrap-around front page which we hope will prove to be a suitable souvenir for the proud people of Penzance.

“Most importantly, Helen has given it a thumbs-up via Twitter.”

    Great front page, works really well as a wrap as well. Plus a well done to the editor dropping the adverts. You don’t often see a good clean wrap these days due to the bean counters.

    Looks good and credit to the newspaper for not going down the route of ignoring Heather Stanning and just including photos of Helen Glover – something that can happen in these situations where one person isn’t from the patch.

    That really is a lovely piece of work.
    As Dave S says so many poster fronts/wraps are ruined by being squeezed to fit around often inappropriate ads/promotional items.When I see some hard-hitting news campaigning front pages for example I always feel their effect is dramatically diminished if those promotional ads catch the eye before the headline or the image.
    Of course I am not such a Luddite as to say we don’t need front page ads/promotional items virtually all of the time but, just in a while and if it truly merits it and isn’t an ego trip, all the usual rules should go out the window to show the paper still believes in quality and still believes that words and pictures matter. And, after all it is called a ‘poster front’ for a reason: because in theory it could be just that – stuck on a wall with pride. This could certainly be so.
    When the HTFP ‘best front page of the year awards are handed out I think those editors/ad managers/MDs who come together to agree that a poster front truly should be a poster front deserve the biggest cheers. As such this is already the (gold) winner for me for 2016 so far.
    Well done Cornishman – a deceptively simple but classic front page.
