Special edition marks weekly newspaper’s 60th anniversary

A weekly newspaper has celebrated its 60th anniversary with a special edition as its editor declared:  “Here’s to another 60 years.”

The Maldon and Burnham Standard has marked the milestone today with an issue which features an eight-page supplement on the paper’s history.

The supplement features pieces by editor Andrew Bennett and historian Stephen Nunn, as well as a foreword by Culture Secretary John Whittingdale, who serves as MP for Maldon.

The pullout covers the history of the Essex paper and the importance of the local press, while explaining how the Standard hopes to be around for at least another 60 years.

Said Andrew:  “Our loyal readers have helped shape this hugely successful weekly newspaper – still going strong since its maiden print run in 1955.

“While the faces and technology have changed, our principles stay intact: to entertain, inform and educate.

“Some local newspaper territories have expanded over the years, but we stay resolutely focused on our core areas and the wonderful people who live there.

“In our eyes, a local newspaper means exactly that – content which really connects with our readers, be it breaking news, campaigns, district news or sport, right from the heart of our community.”

Andrew highlighted housing, hospitals and policing as issues which are set to affect the Standard’s patch in future years.

He concluded: “We will be there to give you all the facts – fighting for the truth and keeping you informed all the way. Here’s to another 60 years of the Maldon and Burnham Standard.”

Great anniversary to celebrate, and well done. Not totally convinced by the front page layout though.
