Public notices return to daily after six-year fight

Michelle LalorPlanning applications and other public notices will today be displayed in a regional daily for the first time since 2009.

The Grimsby Telegraph and its readers had fought a six-year campaign to have the notices printed in the newspaper after its contract with North East Lincolnshire Council was lost.

But an official tender process by the authority was won by the Telegraph, meaning the service has now been restored.

Planning applications, road closures and other important statutory announcements will now be published in the Telegrpah’s classified pages and on a dedicated section of its website.

Since 2009 the notices from NELC have been displayed in various weekly newspapers in the area.

Telegraph editor Michelle Lalor, pictured above left, said: “The campaign six years ago was always about ensuring as many people in North East Lincolnshire as possible saw the public notices, containing information that would affect them and that is why we are delighted to see the public notices returning both in print and on our website.”

According to October’s JICREG figures, the Telegraph is read daily by almost 45,000 people in the North East Lincolnshire unitary authority area. In addition, its website is read by between 35,000 and 40,000 people.

A spokesman for North East Lincolnshire Council said: “Advertising public notices are statutory for local authorities to make sure matters of public interest reach a wide demographic audience and are easily and reasonably accessible for residents across the area.

“Following a tendering exercise to ensure the service delivered continues to be efficient and cost effective, where we received interest from a number of parties, the contract was awarded to the Grimsby Telegraph.”
