Business editor turned entrepreneur unveils latest venture

David ParkinA former regional daily journalist who founded his own business news website has launched a new travel and events venture.

David Parkin, a former business editor of The Yorkshire Post, has set up COPA, which aims to offer bespoke travel services to both corporate and individual clients.

The company will draw on contacts from the private jet charter, hotel and airline industries, among others, to offer its service.

David founded his regional business news website TheBusinessDesk.com in 2007 before selling it in 2013.

Andrew Dick, co-founder of professional services firm Begbies Traynor has invested in COPA alongside Dan Summerfield, former director of challenger bank Aldermore.

The Leeds-based company has also recruited event manager Liz Theakston and office manager Sue Parkin.

Said David: “With the economy continuing to improve, more and more firms want to spend time with key clients and targets.

“The big question is what will attract the right people and deliver value?

“The days of the corporate ‘jolly’ are in the past but that doesn’t mean that you can’t make the time you spend with clients and contacts enjoyable and interesting while also delivering that all important return on investment.

“COPA combines the quality of the people, the experience and the venue to deliver a remarkable event that can be so much more than another golf day or a table at a sportsman’s dinner.”

Good luck sir! I continue to believe that a world outside newspapers is unexplored territory. Why have all ents, news, business, sport all located in a non-comprehensive ‘one size fits all’ newspaper. His businessdesk idea was revolutionary, now is the time to explore a dedicated privately run site for the categories I’ve just listed. I want to launch my own online magazine for my town. Why? Because the local paper has lost its grasp of the zeitgeist after shedding staff. Nothing stopping me or others around the country doing so. There’s life outside the industry, and profit to make.
