Royal visit marks regional daily’s 50th birthday

The Queen’s cousin Princess Alexandra helped a regional daily mark its golden jubilee yesterday.

The Princess visited the Shropshire Star yesterday afternoon as part of the celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of its first publication.

Her Royal Highness was welcome to the paper’s Telford offices by Douglas Graham, chairman of its parent company the Midland News Association.

She toured the newsroom and met staff involved in all areas of the Star’s production.

Editor Martin Wright, who conducted the tour, said: “We are delighted the princess is able to join us at the Shropshire Star for what will be a highlight of our very special year.”

Formerly part of the Express & Star, the Shropshire Star first launched as a standalone paper in 1964.

Come on! Organisations don’t have ‘birthdays’, they mark ‘anniversaries’. What is this? The BBC?
