A senior regional editor is being treated in hospital after smashing his hip and pelvis in a cycling accident.
Yorkshire Post editor Jeremy Clifford, left, sustained the injuries when he was forced into a raised kerb by a passing car on Monday.
Jeremy, who is also chairman of the Johnston Press editorial board, is now due to have a major operation followed by what is expected to be a lengthy period of recovery.
He has received scores of messages of support from friends and colleagues and has responded with a reply from his hospital bed.
Said Jeremy: “I’d like to say thank you for all the kind messages and encouragement. Every e-mail and text sounds so concerned and I am overwhelmed by the support of so many people.
“It really has helped to keep spirits up and keep things in perspective. And, of course, there’s the journalists’ unique sense of humour we would expect.
“As one said, there’s an irony in the accident happening just days before the real cyclists arrive in Yorkshire for the Grand Depart.
“I’m lucky to have such a great quality team in Leeds and Yorkshire to carry on the immense amount of work we have coming up. It’s very hard to think I won’t be there with them. Next time I’ll keep my stabilisers on my bike.”
Jeremy took over at the YP and Yorkshire Evening Post last year following the retirement of Peter Charlton.
He is a previous editor of Sheffield daily The Star and the Northants Telegraph in Kettering.
And where did this accident happen?

Sorry to hear this Jez, hope you’re not in too much pain and get out of hospital soon, fortified by medicinal brandy. Look on the bright side. You could have been stencilled into the tarmac by a lorry, and that would have hurt much more.

Hope you have a full recovery Jeremy (JonB, squished by galloping horse in Morocco, ten days in hospital in Marrakech and Essouiria, during Ramadan).

Typical b***** car, forcing a bikie into the kerb & probably complaining about cyclists not paying road tax as he did so…hope they mend you properly, Jeremy & it doesn’t hurt too much! BTW, I’m sure you won’t do a Rebekah & stay out of touch while you’re away. Bet you’ve got a well-charged mobile…
