Publishing executive quits to 'pursue dream'

Miller HoggA senior executive with regional publisher Archant has quit to “pursue his dream” of running his own business.

Miller Hogg, left, managing director of Archant East, will leave the company on 30 November.

In a statement Archant said he was resigning “to pursue his dream to do something new outside of the company.”

Archant chief executive, Jeff Henry, said: “Miller has had aspirations to work alongside his wife Carole in their own venture for some time. He recently approached me about his future indicating he felt the time was right to pursue his dream.”

The move means a comeback for former Archant Anglia MD Johnny Hustler, who is to return to run Archant East on an interim basis.

He will take over from 1 December until a permanent replacement is named.

Miller originally took over from Johnny in East Anglia in a restructure in October 2013. He was previously MD of the company’s Archant Lifestyle magazines division.

The Archant East division includes four regional dailies – the Eastern Daily Press, Norwich Evening News, Ipswich Star and East Anglian Daily Times.

How odd that he doesn’t have to work his 6 months notice period….

Johnny Hustler must be ranked among the finest names in newspapers alongside such classics as Delwyn Swingewood, Hector McSporran, Alastair McAllister, Petroc Trelawney, Kevan Blackadder, Selwyn Proffitt, R J Apple Jnr and the incomparably monickered Alfred Knobb.
    Any advance on Knobby?

Barely a year in the job. Wonder what he said at the interview when he was asked: “Where do you see yourself in five years time?”
    Deserting a sinking ship, methinks.

What a shame. One of the only out spoken individuals from the top table, that results in musical chairs of the “old guard” from good ship archant-titanic!! When will they ever learn!

Maybe he hasn’t had to serve his time because he is starting his own publication and therefore they would want him out quick?

Miller is one of the few execs with ideas and a willingness to get things done properly. Archant badly needs people with skills and enthusiasm and it’s getting well past time for the new chief exec to set out his stall.

Johnny Huster!! Surely not! Wasn’t he the guy who led Archant into the wilderness that they’re currently still stumbling around in? Desperate times demand desperate measures one would assume.

With his newspaper sales background Miller Hogg was presumably brought in to stem the huge tide of readers walking away from archants daily and weekly appears most tellingly and noticeably the EDP so looking at the latest ABC figures it appears that even he has waved the White flag as their copy sales continue to plummet at an alarming and consistent rate.

Always good to see the old Archant PR machine pumping out the stock standard phrases such as ‘ leaving to persue his dream’ his dream presumably being to jump off the sinking ship asap
I think the fact he is leaving almost immediately and hustler coming back the next day tells its own story.

Well done Millar for trying but when the ships sinking even a competent captain can’t turn it round
Oil the Archant revolving staff door, there’s another one coming through.

In all my working life at Archant I have never ever witnessed a decision to be met with such shock followed by complete numbness by the majority.

Most hard working exec along one one two others who have gone.
Sometimes goes a bit too full on but cares.
Hope the new guys care as the main execs that did put in a shift.
I give it 18 months and it will be sold off for a song to local world.
There is no plan beyond copying or cutting old formulas.
They don’t understand their customers anymore or the staff and unless they grab that mast from staff to management I see very hard times.
There is problem bottom up as well as we are so conditioned to working a certain way that doesn’t have a future.
Johnny is part of the old guard who is fixed in the past.

Archant has a future but the board are clueless and the senior team protects each other, everyone can see this and also they have no idea on how the business works. Our hope for a change in culture has gone
