Johnston Press has appointed a weekly group editor as deputy chairman of its editorial board.
The board, made up of editorial leaders from across the group’s regional divisions, is chaired by Yorkshire Post editor Jeremy Clifford.
Now Gary Shipton, group editor of JP’s Sussex weeklies, has been appointed as Jeremy’s deputy.
It follows the resignation of Scotsman editor Ian Stewart who has stepped down from the board to focus on the forthcoming Scottish independence referendum and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Said Jeremy: “Gary brings a number of strengths to the role and balance to the make-up of the Editorial Board.
“With his wide experience and grasp of the weekly newspaper operation, I will be able to draw on his experience to reflect the work we do across our portfolio of titles. Gary will also be an invaluable help in taking on more responsibilities that flow from the Editorial Board structure.”
Gary started his career more than 30 years ago as an NCTJ trainee on The News in Portsmouth.
For a number of years he wrote the countryside diaries in the Sunday Express under the name Philip Sutton.
Gary has worked through some tough times with heavy losses in sales on his papers including the flagship West Sussex County Times and job losses as JP chases its digital rainbow. A smooth operator who should do well.

Why can’t we say chairman or chairwoman?
“Chair” is just bloody stupid.
