Monthly newspaper to go tabloid with new editions

A monthly community newspaper which is currently published in A4 format is to become a fully-fledged tabloid from next month.

Valley News circulates in South Wiltshire and North Dorset with a free distribution of 30,000 copies and claims a readership of 70,000.

Now it is to double in size to tabloid newspaper format as well as launching a series of new editions.

From next month there will be five dedicated editons entitled Gillingham and Shaftesbury Valley News, Warminster Valley News, Amesbury & Durrington Valley News, Wilton & Salisbury Valley News, and Salisbury & Wilton Valley News.

The Valley News team

The move was announced in a story on the paper’s website published earlier this week.

It read: “Valley News are proud to announce that next month we will change to a tabloid newspaper to provide more local news and better pictures.

“We will launch several new titles to report on local views, features, and advice from experts writing for you on topics ranging from gardening to health and beauty: in fact, all the things you seem to have loved in the A4 Valley News magazine but in a bigger, more local, easy-read format.

“Each month, we will help you to tell your community what is going on in your area in clubs, societies and village halls, and the local council.

“Each month, we will carry useful advertisements from local businesses to help you find the best tradespeople, shops, cafes, restaurants, pubs, financial and business advice, and more, classifieds and free-ads.

“The Valley News team would like to thank all the readers and advertisers who have supported us for the past few years and enabled us to launch this attractive new-look format.”

I anticipate some duplicated content between the Wilton & Salisbury Valley News and the Salisbury & Wilton Valley News.

Don’t knock it Cecil – I picked up a copy last year and it was very fat, 96 pages from memory. The petrol station I picked it up from said it was very, very popular and I can see why. It might be very hyperlocal but it’s very clearly a community publication that is produced to a high standard. Bravo to it and the team.

I do wonder if the format switch will work though. The quarterfold format makes it easier to leave in the littlest room in the house. Not that I ever read from there, of course. Ahem.
