Midlands journalists to launch new press club for city

Journalists past and present will get the chance to rub shoulders with old friends with the formation of a new press club.

Former Nottingham Post journalists-turned-PR professionals Liz Cartwright and Louise Duffield have teamed up with East Midlands Business Link editor Sam Metcalf to launch the Nottingham Press Club.

It is aimed at local journalists, ex-journalists, freelancers, photographers, broadcasters and cartoonists who have worked or are currently working in Nottinghamshire.

However PRs will only be eligible to join if they have previously worked as journalists.

Said Liz: “The idea for the Nottingham Press Club came about as we sat in a pub with a bunch of journalists and old friends – talking about the old days and wondering just where former colleagues had got to.

“We came up with the idea of the Press Club. It’s a chance for current journalists to rub shoulders with those old hacks who remember carbon paper, spikes and the clatter of the typewriter.”

Added Sam: “We are hoping that the Press Club will be great success and a chance to shout about Nottinghamshire’s journalists – some of whom have gone on to do great things such as writing novels and working for national and international media.”

The first Press Club will meet at the Orange Tree pub at 6pm on 12 November. Those interested should RSVP [email protected] to let us know you are coming.

Good idea. It was, of course, done before in the ’80s with the East Midlands Press and Publicity Club. In those days it was 90% PR and associated professions. Journos didn’t turn up in hoped-for numbers. It’ll be interesting to see/hear what attendees expect to get out of the meetings.
