Defunct sports paper’s readers stage reunion

Readers of a Saturday sports supplement that closed nine years ago staged a reunion event last night to share their memories of the paper.

The Hull Daily Mail’s ‘green ‘un’ Sports Mail was published each Saturday until its closure in 2005 and at one time had a paid-for circulation of 70,000.

Last night readers of the much-loved paper gathered at the Country Park Inn on Hessle foreshore to share their reminiscences.

They were joined by several former Hull Daily Mail journalists as well as prominent sporting personalities from the city.

Among those present were former Mail sports editor and Hull KR correspondent John Sexton, along with two of his former colleagues on the Mail’s sports desk, Mike Ackroyd and Dick Tingle.

Former sportsmen who joined the party included former Hull City stars Dean Windass, Ken Wagstaff and Chris Chilton, former England rugby international Roger Sangwin and players from both Hull FC and Hull KR rugby league clubs.

Had six years on Sportsmail. Best years in journalism working on that with some quality journalists. Then the printing press went and the fun times were over. Great product though.
