Daily donates 10pc of cover price to flood victims

A regional daily will today donate part of its cover price to a fund set up to help victims of the floods.

The Western Daily Press has vowed to give 10pc from the sale of every copy of the newspaper to the Somerset Community Foundation’s appeal fund.

The Local World-owned paper has covered the flooding crisis extensively over the last week with a front page appeal urging readers to donate what they can.

The Somerset Community Foundation’s appeal to help flood victims hurtled through the £250,000 barrier within a few days and will now benefit further from the WDP’s donation.

Flooding across the Somerset Levels is the worst for 100 years

The paper Tweeted its decision to donate 10pc of the cover price of today’s edition on Friday afternoon along with a picture of today’s front page.

It said on its website:  “The Western Daily Press is proud to be playing a part in the West Country response to the crisis.   On Monday we will donate 10pc from the sale of every copy of this newspaper straight to the Somerset Community Foundation’s appeal fund.   And we repeat our call to all who can do to spare something for those whose need is great at this time.  Your support will be valued without a doubt”

The community foundation’s campaign has also been supported by the likes of from several leading supermarkets and a growing legion of West Country businesses – large and small.

As reported by HTFP, Gannett, which owns UK regional publisher Newsquest, has also donated the cash to the Flood Relief Fund set up by community leaders in the stricken county.

Newsquest titles the Somerset County Gazette and Bridgwater Mercury handed over £10,000 to the fund this week and also urged readers to support the cause.

Can someone tell me if it’s actually 10% of the cover price, or 10% of what’s left after the newsagents have had their cut?

Grey, unless you’re the FD on the title, does it matter? Surely the gesture should be your primary reason for coming on here. So, for the sake of balance, well done Local World.
