Regional publisher’s chicken mag spreads its wings

A regional publisher’s magazine about keeping chickens is set to spread its wings with expansion to the US.

Your Chickens, which is published by Archant South West, will have a three-issue trial in America, where it will be sold in the stores of the US-based Tractor Supply Company.

The first issue to be sold there will be the February one, pictured below, which includes a four-page feature on America hen keeping.

The magazine was launched by Archant two years ago and has now built up sales of more than 7,000 each month in the UK as it capitalises on the growing interest in keeping chickens.

Archant Specialist circulation manager Richard Kirby said: “The trial will be through 730 stores and will coincide with their ‘Chick Month Bonanza’ – when chicks are sold through their stores.”

Content editor Simon McEwan added: “We have dozens of American hen-keepers following us on Facebook and Twitter. One of them has a very popular blog and put the word out for us asking for hen keeping stories for the February issue.

“Within a week we had received 18 stories from all across the States, from Pennsylvania to Los Angeles and Georgia to Virginia. They were really keen to be featured in the magazine. We aim to promote Your Chickens heavily on Facebook in the coming weeks.”

Your Chickens is also available on subscription to American hen keepers, with digital and download options.

The magazine will also have a presence at the Pet Show 2013, a new event in the UK that is expected to draw 25,000 visitors, and Archant will be a media partner at the show.

All Archant Specialist titles have some form of export distribution into the US and English Home, English Garden, France Magazine and Discover Britain have standalone versions specifically for the country.
