Ofcom launches next phase of local TV for 30 areas

Potential operators of new local TV channels for 30 locations around the UK are being invited to submit expressions of interest.

Ofcom is launching the second phase of its licensing scheme for local TV channels after previously awarding 19 licences for locations including Manchester, Leeds, Bristol, London and Preston.

The media regulator announced in January the 28 new locations where licences would be awarded and is seeking expressions of interest for these, as well as for Swansea and Plymouth where no bidders came forward in phase one.

The 28 new areas are Aberdeen, Ayr, Bangor, Barnstaple, Basingstoke, Bedford, Bromsgrove, Cambridge, Carlisle, Derry/Londonderry, Dundee, Guildford, Hereford, Inverness, Kidderminster, Limavady, Luton, Maidstone, Malvern, Middlesbrough, Mold, Reading, Salisbury, Scarborough, Stoke on Trent, Stratford upon Avon, Tonbridge and York.

Potential applicants are invited to register their interest by 24 April and Ofcom will then advertise them later in the year if there is sufficient interest.
