ITV licence holder wins Scottish local TV bid

The existing ITV licence holder for Scotland has won the right to set up local TV stations in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Broadcast regulator Ofcom has awarded the licences for setting up new ultra-local TV services in the two cities to STV, although it will operate under the name ‘GTV’ in Glasgow and ‘ETV’ in Edinburgh.

The broadcaster was chosen from among  four applicants for the Edinburgh franchise and four for Glasgow.

In announcing its decision, Ofcom said that ETV and GTV’s content propositions were the best developed of the applicants under consideration and that they demonstrated the greatest understanding of the specific needs of the two areas.
