Independent publisher expands reach with third title

An independent publisher has expanded its reach with the launch of a new fortnightly newspaper.

The East Renfrewshire Press was launched last Friday with a print run of 10,000 and is the third title to be published by The Glasgow Press Limited.

The newspaper covers the whole of East Renfrewshire Council’s area and has been launched in addition to the company’s other two fortnightly titles for the south side of Glasgow, the Govan Press and the SouthSide Press.

Between them, the three titles have a print run of 35,000 and are available free to pick up from places like supermarkets, leisure centres, cafes and newsagents.

Editorial director John Maclean said: “We have had a very good response. There are papers that are circulating in that area but the way we have done it seems to have proven popular. People are enjoying it.

“It is the only one that says East Renfrewshire in its title.”

The East Renfrewshire Press will compete with the Glasgow South and Eastwood Extra, which is owned by Johnston Press and covers around two-thirds of the new title’s patch, and also with the Barrhead News, which is owned by the Romanes Media Group.

John took over the Govan Press, which dates back to 1878, five years ago and he launched the SouthSide Press two-and-a-half years ago.

Some areas covered by the East Renfrewshire title previously included in the SouthSide Press’ patch but it also covers new areas.

The digital version of the paper can be read here.

Interesting contrast between this story and the one about Newsquest laying off subs.
Small and independent is the future – shimples!
