Advertising revenues at Newsquest fall 10.5pc

Advertising revenues at regional publisher Newsquest were down 10.5pc, according to the latest results from its US parent company.

Gannett released figures for the second quarter of this year, which show that total ad revenues for Newsquest fell by 10.5pc year-on-year, while for the year-to-date the decrease was 7.7pc.

For the 13 weeks to the end of June, retail advertising revenue was down 7.5pc, national ads fell 31.1pc and classified ones were down 8.9pc.

The results also showed that Newsquest’s digital revenues increased by 8.1pc compared to the same period last year and the company said its network of websites attracted 100.7m monthly page impressions from approximately 12.5m unique users last month.

For Gannett as a whole, total revenue was at $1.3bn which saw little change from a year ago.

Total revenues for its publishing section in the quarter fell 1.7pc to $904.2m and advertising revenues for the whole sector fell 5.3pc but total circulation revenues were up 6pc.

Gracia Martore, Gannett president and chief executive officer, said: “We are very pleased to report solid revenue growth in our broadcasting and digital segments as well as our fourth consecutive quarter of year-over-year circulation revenue growth overall in our publishing segment.

“Earnings per share were higher in the quarter as our strategic initiatives, particularly our content subscription model and digital offerings, continued to gain momentum and positively impact our results.

“Our long-term strategic plan – with a focus on both investment and execution – continues to position us for success well into the future.”
