North West daily publishes football book on iPad

The Bolton News has become one of the first local newspapers in Britain to publish an interactive book for the iPad.

A digital version of a book about its local football club entitled Wanderers Legends has been produced especially for Apple’s tablet computer.

Featuring slideshow galleries,  video and a quiz, the book has gone on sale for £4.99 via the iBookstore and it follows a Kindle version which was released three weeks ago.

The book, which celebrates the achievements of 30 Bolton players, can be downloaded here.

Multimedia editor David Crookes said:  “It is important that we continue to look for fresh ways to deliver our content.  Tablet computers are game-changing and provide us with a wonderful platform on which we can produce products for entire new audiences.

“Having the expertise to produce ebooks in-house allows  us to retain control over the entire process and it will prove crucial in the months and years to come.“

Editor-in-chief Ian Savage added: “These are exciting times for the newspaper industry. Technology is offering us a wealth of opportunity and we can’t look at newspapers, websites, ebooks and apps as separate elements any more.

“For us, it’s about extending the entire reach of The Bolton News brand, no matter what the platform and we are delighted to be breaking fresh ground.”

Utterly brilliant. It’s good to see newspapers extending their reach with new tech. A multimedia approach is the only way local media will survive in the long term. Well done to David and Ian. Other newspapers could do with learning from this.
