Mayor promises Olympic press passes for reporters

The Mayor of London has promised local newspaper reporters that they will have access all areas press passes to the Olympic Games if he is re-elected in May.

Boris Johnson used strong language to describe the limited number of Olympics press passes allocated to Newsquest’s Your Local Guardian group of newspapers in South London, the Wandsworth Guardian reports.

During a visit to Clapham Junction station, he promised reporters covering the Games on behalf of people living in south London they would have access to all areas if he was re-elected.

He said he was still working on securing all-area press passes so the newspaper can cover the Olympics properly.

The Guardian says it has secured just two passes – one allowing access to the tennis at Wimbledon, the other to Hampton Court for the cycle road race.

The Mayor told the newspaper: “You will have access to all areas if I am Mayor. B******s to numbers, we’ll sort you out.”

He made the announcement when he visited Clapham Junction Station to launch his Back Boris campaign for the upcoming mayoral election.

The Newham Recorder was initially the only local paper in London given a press pass by the British Olympic Association for the games.

The Newpaper Society has since been negotiating with the British Olympic Assocition since November over the provision of additional passes which would then be made available to the whole of the regional and local press via a pool system.
