Awards to celebrate papers who ‘succeed against odds’

Organisers of a set of newspaper awards traditionally dedicated to excellence in newspaper production say they want to celebrate titles who “succeed against the odds.”

Entries for the annual Newspaper Awards opened this week and close on 11 February.

Awards director Gary Callum said the 2013 ceremony would aim to celebrate the success of the news media, despite a tough economic climate and ongoing issues such as the Leveson inquiry.

The awards have two categories fully dedicated to regional journalism – Regional Newspaper of the Year and Regional Supplement/Magazine of the Year.

Said Gary:  “The excellence of newspaper production, both in print and online, will always be very important in the judging process of the Newspaper Awards entries.

“However, the Newspaper Awards team, in consultation with senior executives from the industry, felt that the Awards should also concentrate on celebrating how newspapers are succeeding against the odds.

“It’s not just about having a wonderful looking newspaper, it’s even more critical to publish news media products that are successful in an era which sees our industry being attacked from many different angles.

“Not only are the internet and new digital technologies having a profound influence on the very future of newspapers but recent events such as the Leveson Inquiry are casting a negative shadow over the industry as a whole.

“Despite this, I know that the people in our industry are resilient and skilled enough to move forward.

“We may see a very different looking industry in a few years time but at its core will be what we do best – producing world beating news media products that set the standards for others to follow.”

I remember working on an award-winning Yorkshire daily paper and working for a line manager who acted like David Brent from The Office when he showed off these awards to ‘impress’ new trainees and recruits, but despite the paper winning so many awards the paper’s circulation figures continued to steadily decline. What do awards really bring to the table? However, I do appreciate hard workers deserve recognition and may I wish good luck to all who want to win these awards!

I remember those days, but surely it’s an urban myth he acted like that…….
