Sussex title launches twopenny campaign

A South Coast weekly newspaper hopes to encouarge pupils to attend school through a new campaign in which readers will trade in mastheads for money.

Johnston Press title the Chichester Observer in West Sussex has launched its cash for school promotion this week, with the aim of raising enough money to buy items aimed at enouraging children to enjoy school.

Infant, junior and primary schools will receive 2p for every masthead while senior schools up to year 11 will receive 1p.

Said editor Colin Channon: “I work very closely with schools, and I know budgets have never been tighter.

“I was visiting one school which was working on improving pupil attendance, and was very keen to hold a party for pupils. But there wasn’t any money to even fund a small celebration.

“A scheme like this is ideal – it will bring in a little extra cash for a small treat, or buy some books or comics to encourage children to read.

“If schools and parents band together and collect, then a nice little sum could be winging its way to the school office before the end of the school year.”

I think this is being done across Sussex Newspapers, not just in Chichester. It certainly is at my local newspaper elsewhere in Sussex.

An admirable enough sentiment to help schools, but how much cash are schools likely to get when they have to collect 50 or 100 papers for £1. The school would generate far more cash if each parent put 50p aside each week instead of buying the paper…

Looks like a cheap way of flogging a few more papers without shelling out on a better product.
