Two heavyweight regional dailies dominated the prize-giving at the 2011 EDF Energy London and South of England Media Awards on Thursday.
The Southern Daily Echo and Portsmouth’s The News won seven awards between them as the prizes were handed out at Lord’s Cricket Ground.
The coveted Daily Newspaper of the Year title went to the Newsquest-owned Echo, which also won the Community Campaign of the Year award for its ‘Have a Heart’ campaign.
And Echo reporter Jenny Makin won the Daily Print Journalist of the Year award won last year by her newsroom colleague Tara Russell.
However The News, owned by Johnston Press, topped the Echo’s haul with four individual awards.
Emma Judd was named Business Journalist of the Year, Graeme Windell Designer of the Year, Jordan Cross Sports Journalist of the Year, and Sarah Foster Feature Writer of the Year.
Also figuring strongly was the Kent and Sussex Courier with two awards – Columnist of the Year for Louise Ford, and Weekly Paid-for Newspaper of the Year.
And the Croydon Advertiser scooped two of the top individual prizes with Newcomer of the Year for Nikki Jarvis and Weekly Print Journalist of the Year for Gareth Davies.
The awards, now in their sixth year in the London and South of England region, are held in association with HoldtheFrontPage.
