Regional publisher under fire from MPs over cuts

A group of MPs has tabled a Commons motion opposing proposed job cuts at Trinity Mirror’s titles in South Wales.

Ten district office staff, eight production journalists and four sports staff are set to lose their jobs in the cutbacks at Cardiff-based Media Wales.

The plans envisage the introduction of a single production team for news and features across the Western Mail, South Wales Echo, Wales on Sunday and all weekly titles.

Aberavon’s Labour MP Hywel Francis has tabled the Commons motion which has so far been signed ten MPs from across the Labour, Plaid Cymru and Liberal Democrat parties.

It reads:  “This House is shocked at the announcement by Media Wales that it is to cut 22 jobs across its publications in Wales; notes that the proposals by Media Wales management would see 10 district office staff, eight production journalists and four members of the sports staff made redundant; further notes that these cuts are proposed whilst the chief executive of Trinity Mirror, the parent company of Media Wales, received £1.7m remuneration in 2010; supports the National Union of Journalists campaign to protect jobs, wages and conditions as well as the quality of Media Wales journalism; and calls on Media Wales management to meet the National Union of Journalists as a matter of urgency in order to protect jobs and the quality of journalism in Wales.”

Trinity Mirror declined to comment on the motion.

A good but pointless move and I’m deeply sorry for those involved.
We all know of Trinity and their slash and burn policy.
When every sub, photographer, reporter, copy typist has been dismissed, I’m sure Trinity will be on course to make massive profits. No wait – they’ll not be in the newspaper business any more as there will be no one left

Copy typist? You mean they still have copy typists at Trinity?

You think that’s bad. They shut half the toilets at watford to save on toilet paper. What a bummer.
