Axed executive bounces back in Midlands restructure

A newspaper executive who lost his job in the recent restructure by Northcliffe Media has bounced back in a new role running Trinity Mirror’s Midlands titles.

Steve Anderson-Dixon is to take over responsibility for Trinity’s Birmingham and Coventry businesses in a restructure announced today.

The move means the departure of Trinity’s existing managing directors for the two centres, which publish the Birmingham Post and Mail and Coventry Telegraph.

Birmingham MD John Griffiths is retiring, while Coventry MD will be leaving the business, a company statement said.

Until recently, Steve was regional managing director for Northcliffe’s South West division.

However new group managing director Steve Auckland decided to dispense with the regional MD roles and both Steve and his North-East counterpart Phil Inman left the business.

Phil has since re-emerged as the managing director-designate of the Midland News Association, publishers of the Wolverhampton-based Express and Star.

Today’s announcement means that he and Steve will now be rivals in the bitterly-contested West Midlands media patch.

Georgina Harvey, managing director of Trinity Mirror Regionals, said: “I’m delighted to welcome Steve to Trinity Mirror Regionals and the Midlands business. He brings with him over 30 years of experience in the regional media and I look forward to working with him.”

“I would also like to thank John and Debbie for their hard work and commitment to the Midlands businesses and I am sure that everyone who has worked alongside them in their time as managing directors will join me in wishing them all the very best for the future.”

Steve said: “I’m very pleased to be joining Trinity Mirror Regionals and working with the Midlands team to help shape the future of the business.

“The last few years have witnessed huge changes in our industry but what hasn’t changed is the need to deliver quality reach and response for advertisers through highly regarded and well respected newspapers and websites.

“I’m therefore looking forward to joining my new colleagues in the Midlands to build on the strong foundations that are already well established.”

Steve will take up his new role on Thursday, 14 July.

The very best of luck to all the recent new appointees and indeed to all those responsible for managing the volatile world of provincial newspapers at the moment. They are being asked to work through a rapidly evolving business model, where there is literally no hiding place – make sure you find a place somewhere in the day for a breather!

When is someone going to sack the sacker ? God knows how many MD’s there have been in Birmingham in the last few years….and most of them really accomplished people. Isn’t it about time someone in the ivory towers of Canary Wharf took some responsibility instead of just sacking everybody ?

    Where will it all end?
Northcliffe let the best MD they ever had leave to join Trinity – madness! I’m sure Northcliffe will regret it, but then again maybe not
because I don’t think they know what they’re doing.
Good luck Mr A-D you deserve your success and Northcliffes loss is Trinity Mirrors gain.

……..Hmmm and I thought ‘quality reach for advertisers through highly regarded and well respected newspapers and websites’ actually meant readers? Come on read the quotes properly if you’re gonna leave a comment. Circulation/Reach is critical for advertisers and that means readers who respond to advertising. Both go hand in glove.
