The departing editor of Wales on Sunday has unveiled a radical new redesign just days before he is due to leave the title.
Tim Gordon is leaving WoS later this month to take over at Trinity Mirror sister daily the South Wales Echo
Trinity announced this week that Tim is to be succeeded as WoS editor in January by Liverpool Echo executive editor (digital) Alison Gow.
But in what amounts to a parting gift to the title, he has overseen a redesign with the launch of a new magazine-format lifestyle and leisure supplement as its centrepiece.
The supplement, called Seven Days, will offer fashion, food, going out, celebrity gossip and other features and is designed to provide a new platform for advertisers as well as improved content.
Meanwhile sports coverage, previously contained in a pull-out, moves to the back of the paper.
Said Tim: “We’re proud to unveil the new look Wales on Sunday to our readers. It will still contain all the best quality news, sport, entertainment and lifestyle features but we’ve shaken it up into a brand new format.
“The launch of the Seven Days supplement means that readers of Wales’ favourite Sunday paper will have a brand new lifestyle supplement bursting with features, and advertisers will have an effective new platform for reaching those readers.
“We’re promoting Wales on Sunday’s redesign and the launch of Seven Days with an ad campaign which will stretch the length and breadth of the country to ensure our existing readers are in the know and to reach out to new ones.”
The new-look paper will be actively promoted in north Wales by providing news-specific bills and point-of-sale material and a partnership with Trinity Mirror’s Sunday People will provide a combined offer with WoS throughout the launch period.
Wouldn’t the new, incoming editor have preferred to do her own redesign ? Seems an odd ‘gift’ to leave.

What a nightmare for a new editor. Is this another of those redesigns with no real purpose other than ‘nice new fonts and a fresh, clean look’?
