‘We’ll keep on printing’ says editor as paper marks 170th anniversary

A regional editor has vowed to “keep on printing” a weekly newspaper as it marks its 170th anniversary.

The Bury Times, now part of the Newsquest group, was first published on 7th July 1855 with just four pages.

To mark the anniversary, this week’s edition included a celebratory masthead.

And its editor Richard Duggan pledged that the title would continue to appear in print even as local news “moves further into the digital age.”
STb_xs8hRichard wrote in an editorial: “The newspaper industry and, indeed, how we all consume news, have dramatically changed.

“Nobody could have envisioned we’d be able to find out the latest goings on with a few taps of our fingers back in the 19th century.

“The world we live in is remarkably different from that of 170 years ago – but the purpose of our journalists remains the same; to report the stories that matter to you, our readers, and help make a difference in our community.

“We have a proud history of informing, inspiring and entertaining our readers, and I firmly believe the Bury Times has a bright future ahead of it.

“While the world of news moves even further into the digital age, we will continue to keep printing.

“And when the last physical edition of the newspaper does one day roll off the press, the brand will still live on (although that’s quite a way off yet).”
