A reporter has left a regional daily for a new BBC role.

Tom Burgess has announced his departure from the Northern Echo to work as a reporter across BBC North East and BBC Tees.

Tom, pictured, trained at Cardiff University before starting his career with the Bournemouth News and Picture Service in July 2022.

He moved to the Darlington-based Echo the following June and has since specialised in political coverage.

Tom, pictured, wrote on X earlier this month: “Today was my last day at the Northern Echo.

“It’s been an incredible journey and I’ve met some brilliant people but it is time for a new challenge.

“At the end of the month, I’m delighted to say I will be joining BBC North East and BBC Tees as a reporter.”
