Regional daily claims hat-trick of national awards for cricket coverage

Tom evans 2023A regional daily has won its third consecutive national award for the quality of its cricket writing.

The Liverpool Echo has claimed Regional Newspaper of the Year at the 2024 ECB Domestic Cricket Journalism Awards, following its victories in 2022 and 2023.

Judges were impressed by features including an exclusive interview with Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams star and Lancashire hopeful Adnan Miakhel, as well as a piece about Liverpool-based mental health group Opening Up Cricket in the wake of former England player Graham Thorpe’s death.

They described the Echo as “the benchmark for regional cricket coverage”.

Tom Evans, pictured, who leads the Echo’s cricket coverage, said: “It’s always a huge honour to be recognised like this, especially for doing something I enjoy so much.

“I’d like to thank everyone involved in the local cricket scene for their help and support; the team at the Echo for giving me the opportunity to cover cricket on their patch; and my loyal readers for their advice and suggestions.”

The Stoke Sentinel was highly commended in the category.
