A former editor of multiple regional news titles is joining the board of the press watchdog.
Alison Gow, left, has been announced as new member of the board of the Independent Press Standards Organisation, which regulates most print and digital news publications in the UK.
Before leaving her role as audience and content director with Reach plc in 2023, Alison worked in journalism for more than 30 years and is a former editor of WalesOnline, Wales on Sunday, and the Daily Post.
She now works as an editorial leadership coach and consultant, and her board positions include the Journalists’ Charity, Public Interest News Foundation, and the Journalism Innovation and Leadership Programme at the University of Central Lancashire.
Said Alison: “I am delighted to join IPSO’s Board. Press regulation is extremely important, especially with the challenges that journalism is facing today. I look forward to making a contribution to IPSO’s work.”
IPSO’s Board is responsible for the strategic direction of the watchdog but does not make decision on press complaints, which are dealt with by the complaints committee.
Joining that committee as a lay member is George McInnes, who retired from Poole Hospital/University Hospitals Dorset in 2024 having been a consultant radiologist and clinical director of radiology.
He said: “I am pleased to have the opportunity to contribute my skills to IPSO’s work of ensuring freedom of expression and accountability in the public interest.”
IOSO chairman Lord Faulks added: “I am happy to welcome Alison to the Board and George to the Complaints Committee. They are each highly accomplished in their fields and will contribute valuable expertise and perspectives to IPSO’s work.”
Both appointments took effect on 1 January.
