Former Newsquest duo launch new site ‘to give town its voice back’

HolbrookA town which lost its dedicated local news website after 27 years last month is to get a new ‘voice’ thanks to two former regional press bosses.

As previously reported on HTFP, Rochdale Online ceased publication after reportedly struggling to attract sufficient advertising revenue.

But Northern Echo and Bolton News editor Karl Holbrook has moved swiftly to fill the vacuum by launching a new hyperlocal site, the Rochdale Times.

He has been joined in the venture by Nick Fellows, who was his managing director at Newsquest North West when he edited the Bolton News.

Karl, who now runs his own PR and media consultancy North Square Media, will be editing the new site alongside his role as consulting editor of B2B website Prolific North.

Nick is now managing director of Warrington-based publishing and digital marketing outfit Crosby Associates Media, which operates s more than 30 established brands across the housing and construction sectors.

Said Karl, pictured: “Local journalism is under immense pressure, and it’s devastating to see established titles disappear. Communities like Rochdale need strong, independent voices to champion them more than ever. That’s why we’re launching Rochdale Times.”

“If we get the right support from the people and businesses of Rochdale, this can grow into a really valuable asset for the community.”

Added Nick: “We know from previous experience how much a town benefits from having a dedicated news service; we saw first-hand the positive reaction to the launch of The Oldham Times, following the closure of The Oldham Chronicle. Rochdale deserves the same.”

“We’re doing this for the people of Rochdale, but we need them to get behind it. The stronger Rochdale Times becomes, the better it can serve the community.”

It is the second time the duo have launched a new title; while at Newsquest they set up Salford City News and their experience in building news platforms gives them confidence that Rochdale Times can make an impact.

Stories currently being covered on the site the fight to restore Rochdale’s rail link to London and events marking its current status as Greater Manchester Town of Culture.

There is also plenty of football coverage with Rochdale due to compete in the FA Trophy semifinal and Rochdale-born star Keira Walsh chasing Champions League glory with Chelsea.

The new site is actively seeking contributors, thought leaders, and businesses looking to share their expertise. To submit editorial content, contact [email protected].
